Can You Stay Awake During the Holidays?

Have you ever wondered if you would be able to stay awake after a big holiday dinner? You know what I’m talking about! You see the delicious food on the table, picture perfect for a few seconds, and then everyone dives in like a pack of wolves. Before you know it, the table looks like a disaster area after a construction crew successfully completed its demolition project. There are napkins, plates with food remnants, partially-empty glasses and forks, spoons and knives strewn all over the … [Read more...]

Are You Constipated?

My sister reminded me a few weeks ago of what our grandmother used to say about mean people. If someone is disgruntled, then they must be constipated. That is probably right on target. People should be naturally pleasant. It’s when our crazy thoughts lead us into the “Grumpy Gus” routine of yelling and complaining and stomping our feet. Whether you’re going camping, clam digging on the beach, picnicking in the park, hanging around at the zoo, investigating at the museum, hiking in the mountains, boating, hunting, bird watching, or just going to a sporting event, you have to prepare. How can we … [Read more...]

Barbecue Safely and Nutritiously.

Independence Day is here!  The official start of summer in Western Washington—okay, I know it’s the day after July 4th, but work with me here.  Warm temperatures…cool clothes and parades.  Maybe a first visit to the water.  That means most people are barbecuing somewhere in the United States to celebrate the founding of our country.  Good times and good food.  The question is:  How many people are barbecuing safely? While I don’t have an answer to that question, I can talk about unsafe … [Read more...]
