You Can’t Convince Anybody of Anything

With the Presidential race well under way, we are all being bombarded by the nightly news, FaceBook, campaign ads, phone banks and all the other ways we find ourselves deluged with advice about how to vote. The more people try to convince us that their candidate is the right candidate, the more firmly we tend to hold on to our own beliefs. In truth, the same thing holds true about anything. We feel we’re right and someone else tries to reason us out of it. So why doesn’t it work? Imagine you … [Read more...]

Step Through the Looking-Glass

You remember Alice, the girl who stepped through the Looking Glass. I had a conversation with a client, let’s call him Bob, the other day who told me he was having difficulty communicating with his son. Everybody needs a Warm Fuzzy

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. What you just read was what psychologists call a “positive stroke.”  It’s me saying something nice to you.  It’s true, I do appreciate you but how many times does an author tell you that?  If you think about it, how many times do a lot of people say nice things about you, to you?  In this hurried time, strokes are often an early casualty. “Hi, Mary.  Good to see you.” “Thanks for your help.” “That was great.” Even just a smile and a … [Read more...]
